Retro House Mixtape

These episodes come about in varying ways. Sometimes I know exactly what I'm going to play. At others times I make it up on the spot (like with the previous episode - "That London Sound"). This time it's a little of both. I had the first four songs picked and then winged it from there. What we end up with is a mix with a split personality. It starts with a vibe that flirts between funky and jacking but at the halfway make we go into progressive and melodic territory. For this episode I felt like going with a theme, so I dipped into a folder of tunes simply called "That London Sound". It's a collection of tracks that takes me back to the late 90's. Around '97 when the likes of Jeremy Sylvester (under various guises), RIP and Nu-Birth (again, under various guises) were pumping out garage bangers with synth-based chords, soulful vocals and deep, deep baselines. If you liked the previous 'Speed Garage' episodes of the show, you'll probably like this one too! I didn't know where to start with this episode so I ended up just closing my eyes and flicking through my selection of tunes. I decided that whatever I landed on was what I would start with. As luck would have it, the fates chose a solid tribal-drum banger from Eric Kupper. What a fantastic place to start! From there it was a steady job of building a set on the fly which is always fun. I managed to work in a few favourites on the way such as "Move Your Body" by Ruffneck and Full Intention's remake of "You're The One For Me". And we're back with another multi-genre mix of old house music. It was a close shave this one, all very last minute and at the time of recording I didn't think it was going to be worth sharing. Fortunately a re-listen the following day with fresh ears confirmed that it was another good-to-go mix. Favourites for this episode include "Boogie Ryda" by Grant Nelson and Bart B More's bootleg edit of Intro by Alan Braxe and Fred Falke which I've been meaning to work into an episode for ages. Full tracklist, as always, is up on the website - www.retrohousemixtape.com Also, my social media game has stepped up a notch, Retrohousemixtape is now on TikTok as well as Instagram, Threads and Bluesky. "Rhythm is a Mystery" and other five star choice cuts of house music in this episode of Retro House Mixtape. I don't know if you know this... but it has been a bit hot lately. Like, REALLY hot. So hot in fact that I almost couldn't get this episode recorded. The "studio" where I record these episodes was clocking in at 32 degrees C everyday. There was no way I was going to be able to record a set in that heat. Fortunately I managed to hold on for a cooler window and get this mixtape down. And I'm glad I did because this episode is a STORMER! Some absolutely sublime blends are happening throughout this mix. Things start at the deeper end of house for most of the first half of the mix and then we transition into some more well known tunes towards the end. Hello there! It's another 60 minute mix of lovely old house music from the 90's and early 2000's. I really enjoyed putting this episode together. There are some long transitions in the first half of the mix where the tracks just kind of melt into each other (that being said, the mix into 'Out of Control' does get a bit wobbly for a moment thanks to a technical issue). Then the energy switches up at the mid-way point and everything kicks up a gear for the finale. As always, the full track listing and links to all my other episodes can be found on the website - retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

After the Trance shenanigans of the previous episode we are back into the normal Retro House antics for this mixtape. Starting with a garage-esque groove before slipping into some funky house tracks. We then slide into some disco-led house jams and end up in ravey territory. Full track list is over on the site retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Way back in 2021 I did a one-off Trance episode of Retro House Mixtape, imaginatively called "Retro Trance Mixtape". Surprisingly it was a very popular episode, pulling in really good numbers alongside all the normal house music episodes. Since bringing the show back online earlier this year I'd been thinking about doing a follow up Trance episode. By complete coincidence I've ended up doing one on what is essentially the 5-year anniversary of the previous Retro Trance Mixtape. What are the odds? Here we have got ten absolute barnstorming Trance tracks over 60 minutes. My stand-out favourite is the Akira Kayosa remix of System F's "Out Of The Blue". A pure euphoria rush of a track. We are indeed Tripping on Sunshine for this episode. Seeing as we are going through a belter of a heatwave here in the UK, I thought I would put together a sunshine themed mix. Every main track in this mix references the sun in some way or another (not so much the accapellas, maybe think of those as more of a garnish). It's quite the euphoric sound for this mix, not very deep but lots of uplifting vibes. I hope you get to enjoy it on a sunny day. Yeah I missed putting out an episode last week. Sorry about that. Hopefully this banger of an episode makes up for it. I've gone for a lower tempo for this episode. starting at around the 120bpm range where things have little more of a disco feel to them. There's a favourite tune of mine early in the mix, "Number 1" by Playgroup. I very much recommend checking out the excellent music video that goes with the song. Finishing off the mix is a big hands-in-air anthem "U Sure Do" from Strike. Almost verging into cheese really, but this remix is something I used to play out a lot at the time and I think it sits nicely at the end of this episode. Heard a tune you like? 60 minutes of lovely funky house vibes for this episode. As we slide into the warmer weather for 2026 I decide to dip into some funkier flavours for episode 127. I felt compelled to drop in a stellar Ashley Beedle remix having seen him on Instagram talking about the making of ‘Lazy’. So good to see him smiling and laughing following his health battles from a couple years ago. What I love about doing this show is digging out tracks that I never realised I had. Case in point is the first tune in this set, a remix of Hysteric Ego's "Want Love". I remember buying this release back in 1998 and being drawn to the speed garage style remix by The Sol Brothers. I never really paid much attention to what else was on the 12" vinyl. Fast forward to 2026 when a few weeks ago I was browsing on Discogs and spotted this same 12". I saw someone leaving a comment on thow good they thought the Timewriter remix was. Off the back of that I immediately dug it out and sure enough I quickly realised that I had to get it into a mixtape. It's a 90's tune fest in this episode of Retro House Mixtape. Everything here is from that sweet spot between '96 and '99. There's chunky bass-led garagey rhythms, stompy disco house and some outright all-timer anthems going on in this mix. Find the full tracklist on retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. From top to bottom, there's some lovely old 90's house tunes going on in this episode Starting with the all-time classic "Good Life" by Inner City, remixed by Nu-Birth giving it that late 90's London-garage flava. Loving the final tune as well, super-producer Stonebridge with a disco-tinged thumper called "Calling". Hope you like this one. Once again we venture into a mix of lovely old house music. I tend to do a little bit of planning ahead when it comes to making these episodes. I like to have some kind of a theme or direction in place before I make a start. For this episode however it was a case of "sod it, let's just bung together a bunch of tunes that I like". And that's exactly what we have here. A good few big names on this episode. A favourite of mine is the Futureshock remix of "Music : Response" by The Chemical Brothers. Join us as we step into another bout of house music. Fun little story about the opening track “Bad Things” by Njoi. I bought this back when it came out in 1995 but for some reason I sold it as part of a big clear out prior to moving to Bournemouth in 1999. Fast forward to a year ago, this track randomly popped into my head. I was then immediately kicking myself having sold my copy of it all those years ago. Less than 48 hours later I’m in town with a little time to kill. I pop into a charity shop (I’m obsessed with picking up second hand cd’s) and sitting there in the vinyl rack was this very record. What are the odds? I couldn’t believe it! In excellent condition and only £4. I snapped it straight up. Glad to have it back in my collection. I was bouncing around the room whilst putting this together. I like how it flips halfway through from a clubby vibe into more disco-edged grooves. AS usual it's mostly retro house jams but there's also a cheeky addition of 'As We Step' by the Audio Bullys, a more recent…

After the love-fest from the previous episode we are back down to clubby business for episode 121 of Retro House Mixtape. Starting off with an acappella combo that I recently discovered by chance, it's a sublime mix between the work of King Unique and the vocal from "Someday" by CeCe Rogers. It's a clubby first half including "Loops of Life", a favourite of mine that I remember picking up from BangBang record shop in Bristol. From there the mix transitions into funkier territory bouncing between disco vibes and 80's-esque house from Fred Falke. For the final track we end up in the familiar company of the Rhythm Masters as they remix 'Jus' Come' by Cool Jack. Hope you enjoy this one. Seeing as this episode releases over Valentine's weekend I thought I would put together a "love themed" episode. Every track in this 60-minute mix references LOVE in some way or another. It unexpectedly ended up being a mix that works through various flavours of house. We start in the early 90's with some piano house anthems, drop into some mid-90's epic house, slide into some filtered disco thumpers and then finish on a soulful vocal house tip. Check out the full tracklisting on my website. You can also stream the episode in high quality audio on Mixcloud. Big love to you all! :) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I felt like dipping into more disco-tinged territory for this mixtape after the trance and stompin' house shenanigans of the previous episode. For this mixtape we kick things off with a disco-dub remix by the legendary François Kevorkian. At the same time I also have a bit of fun by playing around with the vocal from "Anytime" by Nu-Birth to create something new and interesting. From there we flow through some tasty disco house grooves before ending up with the classic "Bring it on Down" by Wildchild. I enjoyed putting this one together. If you also enjoy it do please give the mix a like or a comment on Mixcloud. Every little click nudges that algorithm along and helps me tremendously. Cheers. Well hello there. It truly has been a while hasn't it? So yeah, I've been away doing a thing with making music (something I've been mucking about with since the late 90's) and that's been a bit of fun. But over the last few months I've had the itch to record a new mixtape and come back to this project. And so here we are. A new mixtape to kick off a string of new episodes coming out in 2026. This one starts off big and dramatic with an anthem from the rave-era. From there we move through to some classic trance tracks, dip into some melodic late-90's trance and finish up with a stompin' mid-90's house vibe. The plan is to release a new mixtape every other week, most likely on Fridays. So keep an eye out for when those new episodes go live. Don't forget to check out my newly re-designed website at retrohousemixtape.com or look up retrohousemixtape on Instagram and Threads. This week’s episode is a 60 minute journey of Retro House that takes you from the Beach to the Main Room. There is a funky summer style in the beginning including an all time classic from Frankie Knuckles (happy Frankie Knuckles day btw if you’re reading this on August 25th). The second half of the mix takes a turn into bigger, more club based territory and features a replay of one of my all time favourites, ‘Help Me Make It’ by Huff and Puff (originally played in Episode 7 of Retro House Mixtape, do check that one out also). Fun fact: Frankie’s old ‘Def-Mix’ buddy Satoshi Tomiie also makes his debut on Retro House Mixtape with TWO tracks in this episode. Tracklisting: Black Magic – Freedom (Make It Funky) (Morel Inc Mix) CZR feat Daryl Pandy – Bad Enough (Henry Street Mix) Frankie Knuckles presents Satoshi Tomiie – Tears (Full Intention Mix) Buster Cream – Do It Disco Boys Kut n Paste vs Simone – My Family Depends On Me (Vocal) Saffron Hill feat Ben Onono – My Love Is Always (Tim Deluxe’s Summertime Remix)…

DEEP HOUSE. It’s all the kids ever go on about these days (at least that what it seems like). So for this episode of Retro House Mixtape we dip into a few old skool deep house cuts. There’s the dub take on ‘Sweetest Day of May’ by Joe T Vanelli and Marlon D’s deep house monster ‘Jesus Creates Sounds’ also gets an airing. There’s always room for a banger or two though as Dave Spoon delivers a cracking remix of ‘Right Before My Eyes’ by Southside Hustlers. The last few episodes have been quite focused around vocal, soulful house music. There’s a still a little of that going on in this DJ set but I felt like switching it up a little with a few more bangers than usual. Chocolate Puma remix the rave classic ‘Playing With Knives’ and AstroFarm drop a delicious guitar-laden rework of ‘Strings of Life’. It’s a slight change of pace this week on the Retro House Mixtape as we dip into a selection of tunes from the early 2000’s. It’s a clubby & chunky set with a few acapellas dropped in to create some pretty cool sounding moments. I particularly like how the acapella from Bump’s ‘I’m Rushing’ works with ‘That Piano Track’. Also of note is ‘Pump It Up’ by Danzell, a mid-2000’s tune that lifts the same ‘Black and White Brothers’ sample as the current club banger by Endor. Tracklisting: Markus Nikolai – Bushes (Norman Cook Remix) CN Williams – Bad Mamma Jamma Original Mix Bit Funk – Rap Music Sandy Rivera & Andy Daniell – Whatever (ATFC Remix) A-Studio feat Polina – SOS (Skylark Vocal Mix) Paperclip People – Throw (Slam’s RTM Remix) Missy Elliot – 4 My People (Acapella) Orbital – Halcyon (Tom Middleton Re-model) Danzell – Pump It Up (Jerry Ropero and Denis The Menace Remix) Chuck Roberts/Khrizz Tapia – My House (Khrizz Tapia Bootleg) Andry Nalin & Gregor Wagner Present Bush II Bush – That Piano Track (MYNC…

After last weeks mix of garage rhythms and big fat basslines it seemed like a good idea to follow it with a different vibe. I guess you could call this mix ‘progressive’, it’s very synth-based and melodic with a fair few vocal tracks to boot. The opening track by The Beloved is a long time favourite of mine, the backing vocals are so good on that track. There’s also a rare U2 remix in there by house music legends Pete Heller and Terry Farley that is bursting with juicy old school house vibes. Tracklist: 1. The Beloved – Ease The Pressure (Surge) 2. Kristine W – Feel What You Want (Greenlight Vocal) 3. Eve Gallagher – You Can Have It All (Ramp Club Mix) 4. Sebastian Leger – Hypnotised 5. Empire of the Sun – We Are The People (Crazy P Remix UK Edit) 6. 4Tune 500 – Dancing In The Dark 7. U2 – Salome (Zooromancer Remix) 8. DJ Rolando – Jaguar (Space Motion Remix) 9. Pauline Taylor – Constantly Waiting (Rollo & Sister Bliss Epic Mix) 10. Disco Citizens – Footprint (Sonic Mix) 11. Members of Mayday – Sonic Empire…

It’s a bit of a change up for this week’s episode of Retro House Mixtape as I pull out a selection of old skool deep house cuts. Particular favourites of mine include the opening track, a Gui Boratto remix of Massive Attack and a Shadow Child remix of ‘Strong’ by London Grammar. Despite the deeper tone I still manage to squeeze in a couple of bangers towards the end. I just can’t resist the pull of tunes that make me want to dance like a nutter. Hosted on Acast. It’s a landmark episode here at ‘Retro House Mixtape’. Firstly, it’s Episode 10! We’ve hit double figures, the big 1 – 0! Secondly, we’ve broken the 500 followers barrier on social media which is fantastic! A huge thank you to everybody who follows Retro House Mixtape on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Mixcloud. There are a few shout outs in this weeks episode so keep an ear out for those. Finally, there’s also a little nod to Aretha Franklin at the start of this weeks show which leads into a section of funky, uplifting house music before culminating in a breakbeat throw down. Hope you enjoy it. Full set-list at retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I may have hit the coffee a little hard before recording this weeks mix of house music. It’s definitely a bit more ‘up for it’ with fewer vocals and more ‘bangers’ than usual. Hope you guys enjoy it this week. There’s plenty more where that came from. Full set-list at retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It’s the weekend!! Time for another sixty minute slice of forgotten house music classics picked from the nooks and crannies of my record collection. It really does run the gamut this week; from the disco vibes of Whirlpool Productions, to the tech based ‘Loops of Life’ by Acme through to the late 90’s hard house stylings of Baby Blue (a.k.a. Tin Tin Out). Topping it all off is ‘Open Your Mind’, a little anthem from Usura. (I also manage to give out the wrong web address at the end of the show, doh!) Full set-list at retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This episode almost nearly didn’t happen. A few short hours ago a couple of free tickets to Bestival were placed into my hands, talk about a jammy piece of luck! I’ve had to turn this episode out super quick at the last minute whilst frantically packing for a weekend of camping and festival shenanigans. It starts off on an old school house music vibe but by the end it’s properly chugging along. There are a few choice cuts in there this week. ‘At Night’ by Shakedown is having a huge resurgence thanks to some excellent new remixes by Purple Disco Machine and Peggy Gou, I thought I’d throw in the Kid Creme mix which still sounds great today. There’s also the superb remix of ‘Show Me Love’ by Todd Edwards where he takes an all time classic tune and totally reworks it into something brilliant. Finally I also wanted to get the Hardfloor remix of ‘Blue Monday’ by New Order in there somewhere as it’s having a mini revival here in the U.K. thanks to a TV advert. Hope you enjoy it. Don’t forget to share it with anyone…

The heatwave continues here in the UK so I figured I would roll with it and kick things off with a summery house music vibe as per Episode 3 (check it out if you’ve not yet heard it). Highlights of this episode includes the rare Grant Nelson remix of ‘Too Young To Die’ by Jamiroquai and the ‘Some Justice’ / Urban Shakedown bootleg that finishes off the set. Full set list is at retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 5 of the Retro House Mixtape is here! This week it’s a mix that kinda runs in ‘phases’. You’ve got a funky vocal led section at the start, then it drops into a UK Speed Garage kinda thing for a bit before getting a bit clubby and dropping a few big tunes towards the end. Full track-listing is available at retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This weeks mixtape starts off with a slower tempo than usual before diving into an uplifting slice of soulful house. As per Episode 1 there is another little exclusive thrown into the mix in the form of a ‘Incognito / Royksopp’ mash-up that works really well in the summer. Going into the final stretch it gets a little anthem-tastic plus there’s a lesser known gem from Fire Island (aka Heller and Farley). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Is it the weekend already? I guess it’s time for another episode of Retro House Mixtape. It’s a bit of a last minute effort this week. I had a whole other episode ready to go but the weather here in the U.K. has been so amazingly hot I felt it necessary to put together a mix to compliment it. I went back and recorded another mix consisting of tunes that sound great when blasted out in the sunshine. Hopefully it’ll hit the spot for you during this sunniest of spells. Full track-listing is available at retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

And here we are, Episode 2. Huge thanks to everyone who listened to my debut mix and also took the time to follow and share the Retro House Mixtape online. This week I’ve pulled some real old nuggets from out of the crates, particularly the Bucketheads inspired remix of ‘Midnite’ by D-Influence and the salsa funk meets UK house fusion of ‘Madagascar’. Note also the original ‘Stevie Wonder’ bootleg version of Cleptomaniac’s ‘All I Do’ (the official release featured Bryan Chambers on vocals). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I thought I’d switch things up this week by putting together set based solely around one genre of house music. I’ve enjoyed dropping the more bass heavy tracks in the previous episodes. I figured it would be fun to do a whole episode based around ‘Speed Garage’. These days it’s probably more known as ‘UK Garage’ but I’m a stickler for old habits. The tag ‘Speed Garage’ takes me back to digging through the racks at records shops for those elusive bootlegs. There’s a little smattering of the funky ‘London-vibed’ vocal stuff at the start of this mix but it’s not long before the bass bin bangers start to drop. I tried to avoid the huge anthems (Spin Spin Sugar, Gunman etc) so I could make room for more lesser known tracks, I did get a request for Ripgroove however so I’ve dropped in a remix to keep things fresh. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Retro House Mixtape is back once again with the ill behaviour. It’s a solid mix of funky house, clubby house and vocal bangers in this tasty episode. I also drop in a stone cold favourite of mine, ‘Color Of My Skin’ by Swing 52. Massive thanks to all for support with last week’s show. There are only a few more episodes to go in 2019 before the show takes a break for a bit so be sure to make the most of this and the next few weeks. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Following last week’s slightly deeper episode we are firmly back in familiar territory with a house set comprising of funky, vocal house tunes. Favourites for me this week include ‘Underground’ by the Rhythm Masters and ‘That Organ Track’ by house music veteran Brain Tappert. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It’s sometimes funny how these episodes come about. A lot of the time it’s as simple as thinking of that first track and building from there. I had this opening track by Eve Gallagher pencilled in as an opener for weeks now with the intention of building it into a melodic, clubby set that climaxed with some big epic tunes. Instead this set starts off on that same clubby vibe but by the end it steers into a more ‘ravey’ direction but hey, it works for me so that’s all good. As 2019 is drawing to a close the Retro House Mixtape is getting ready to take a holiday break. Don't worry, there are still a few more episodes to go before that much needed hiatus. This episode features the usual selection of funky old skool house music that will lift your spirits. Things take a slightly chunkier path towards the end with a few bangers from Superchumbo, Untidy Dubs and Da Techno Bohemian. Find the full tracklisting on the blog. Hosted on Acast. Following last weeks little nostalgia trip, it’s now time to break out the first brand new episode of Retro House Mixtape for the New Year. It’s a funky selection of vocal-based house music with a little kick at the end. A particular favourite of mine is ‘Can You Feel It’ by DJ Duke which is a tasty little disco sampling belter of a tune. There is also one of my favourite Jamiroquai remixes via Roger Sanchez and the cheeky ‘Stardust’ referencing ‘Step to Me’ by Grant Nelson. Check out the full track list on the blog. Hosted on Acast. It’s the final episode of Retro House Mixtape for 2018 and this week it’s a bumper long session. The year is seen out with a bang as the normal rules go out the window, it’s not just long forgotten retro house music this week. It’s also anything from the last 12 months that I’ve loved, some all time favourites and everything else in between. Essentially it’s a full blown party to stick on when you’re having a get together over the holiday season. Get stuck in and don’t forget to share it online. Check out the track list on the blog. I wanted to do something a little different for Episode 20 of Retro House Mixtape and as luck would have it something perfect was happening on the same day as this episode. One of my all time favourite bands, The Prodigy, were releasing their latest album ‘No Tourists’. I’ve been lucky enough to catch them live on three separate occasions and every time they have torn the roof off the place. It’s not often that a new Prodigy album comes around so I couldn’t resist putting a mix together to mark the occasion. For this mix I’ve picked out various bootlegs and remixes that I have stumbled across over the years. There’s even a little something that I made myself a LONG time ago (so bear with me when it comes to the sound quality on that one, okay?). Check out the full tracklisting on the blog. Whoops! I’m a bit late on getting this post uploaded to the blog. This episode first went out almost a week ago! This episode is a more deeper, ‘head-down’ affair. I had great fun mixing this and mucking about with some FX on the fly. Hope you enjoy it too! Check out the full tracklisting on retrohousemixtape.com Hosted on Acast. Welcome along to another episode of Retro House Mixtape. This week’s episode dips through various old skool flavours from funky disco house, rave-tinged remixes and a little dabble into speed garage. Particular favourites of mine this week include ‘Into Your Heart’ remixed by Tall Paul and Olav Basoski remixing a cut from Apollo Four Forty.
